Tactical motifs
Forks, pins, skewers and discovered attacks win material. Learn each motif, then drill it in the puzzles.
- The fork One piece attacks two at once; the opponent can save only one.
- The pin A piece that may not move without exposing the king behind it is pinned. Attack it again!
- The skewer Attack a valuable piece; when it moves, take the piece behind it.
- Discovered attack Move one piece out of the way and another attacks behind it.
- Double check Two pieces check at once: the king must move, nothing else helps.
