Few pieces, exact play. The opposition, the Lucena and Philidor positions are the foundations of every endgame.
- The opposition With king and pawn against king, the king in front of the pawn wins if it takes the opposition.
- The Lucena position Build a bridge: the rook shields your king from checks so the pawn can promote.
- The Philidor position Defend with the rook on your third rank; check from behind once the pawn advances.
