Basic checkmates

With a queen or a rook and your king you can always mate a lone king. The engine defends as well as it can.

  1. Mate with the queen Push the king to the edge with the queen, bring your king up, and mate. 1 exercise
  2. Mate with the rook The rook cuts the king off; your king takes the opposition; the rook mates on the edge. 1 exercise
  3. The ladder mate Two rooks take turns checking and push the king to the edge. 1 exercise
